Clarkstown police officer credited with helping save shooting victim's life

CENTRAL NYACK -

Four suspects remain at large after a man was shot in Central Nyack.

The victim is now recovering at Westchester Medical Center, where he's listed in serious condition. But officials say that victim may have died if it had not been for a quick-thinking Clarkstown police officer.

As News 12 has reported, the 29-year-old man was shot while sitting in a car on Mountainview Avenue in Central Nyack.

Officer Caniel Malone with the Clarkstown police was one of the first officers on the scene. He found the man bleeding profusely from gunshot wounds in both of his legs.

With seconds meaning the difference between life and death, medics asked Officer Malone for  help.

"I was confident when I got there, the training took over," Malone says.

He pulled out his department-issued tourniquet, a device that helps stop a person with a serious injury from bleeding out.

Sgt. Daniel Burke frequently trains officers on how to use the tourniquet, but he says to his knowledge it was the first application of the device by law enforcement in Rockland County.

Officials say it's an inexpensive tool that's easy to carry -- but it's the training that makes this device a proven lifesaver.
