State mulls toll hike for Thruway, Tappan Zee Bridge

Drivers who navigate on the NYS Thruway could soon pay more to travel that route.
New York State Thruway Authority officials say they may increase tolls by 20 percent over four years starting next year. The hike may also include a reduction in E-ZPass discounts. Thruway officials say the rising fuel costs have led to slower traffic growth, causing the need for hikes.
Most passenger and commercial drivers could see an annual toll increase of under 5 percent, which would be phased in between 2008 and 2011. However, larger increases are possible in some areas considered discount zones. Those areas include the $1.25 toll in New Rochelle and the Tappan Zee Bridge toll.
Thruway Authority officials say the increases could be scaled back or avoided if revenues rise higher than projected. They are scheduled to meet again in November.
