Playing With Fire: Secret meeting in Ramapo
State officials have given the Town of Ramapo until next Thursday to resolve issues with its controversial fire inspection procedures, which came to light after News 12's "Playing With Fire" investigation.
Earlier in the week, the state ordered Ramapo to address flaws in its inspections that allowed private and yeshiva schools to pass, even when they had critical violations.
The town fire inspector, Adam Peltz, was placed on desk duty after allegedly failing to note a number of hazardous conditions in his inspections.
But firefighters, county officials and state legislators have been lobbying Albany for years to intervene in Ramapo, they say.
In a bid to address the inspection failures, town attorney Michael Klein met with school leaders at a secret location Wednesday, away from the media.
Afterward, both sides said they want to ensure the safety of Ramapo's school children.
The state is also demanding other reforms, but has granted the town another month to implement them.
