Opening statements are scheduled for tomorrow in the "Corridor of Corruption" trial of state Sen. Malcolm Smith.
A jury comprised of seven women and five men was seated today after two days of questioning in the politically charged case.
At the core of the case is the allegation that Smith tried to bribe Republican party officials to get permission to run on the GOP ticket for New York mayor.
Also charged in the case are former New York City Councilman Daniel Halloran, who allegedly helped facilitate the bribes, and Vincent Tabone, the former vice chair of the Queens Republican Party, who allegedly accepted a bribe.
Former Spring Valley Mayor Noramie Jasmin and former Deputy Mayor Joseph Desmaret are also connected to the case. Desmaret pleaded guilty in the case, and Jasmin is scheduled to go on trial this fall.
Even though he is on trial, Sen. Smith is running for re-election in his Queens district. His lawyers say he is claiming entrapment by investigators.
