Officials: West Point cadet among 9 dead at Fort Hood
West Point officials have confirmed one of their cadets was among the nine Fort Hood soldiers killed during a training exercise last week.
Mitchell Alexander Winey, 21, was among those killed when floodwaters swept away their vehicle near Fort Hood. Three other soldiers were rescued.
West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen says the Indiana-born cadet was a member of the class of 2018. He was at the Texas army base for cadet troop leader training.
West Point officials say Winey was an exemplary student an engineering management major. They say he was a strong athlete who also participated on the school's ski patrol. The academy called him a rising leader and a friend to everyone.
Information on funeral arrangements for Winey has not yet been released.
