Officials say Iranian hackers attempted to gain access to the controls at a dam in Rye two years ago.

Investigators told The Wall Street Journal that the hackers never actually gained control of the dam, but if they did they could have caused a lot of destruction.

If the cyberattack was successful at the Bowman Avenue dam, it could have caused an explosion, a flood or a traffic jam. Port Chester Middle School is just down the street from the dam, as well as a residential neighborhood.

Rep. Eliot Engel released a statement saying in part, "Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism around the globe, so this sort of behavior is par for the course...It's clear that we must do more to assess and address potential vulnerabilities to a cyberattack."

The attempted breach was just one of 295 similar incidents in the United States investigated and thwarted by the Department of Homeland Security in 2013.

Officials in the city of Rye told News 12 that they were contacted by the DHS in 2013 regarding the attempted hacking and cooperated with authorities.
