Fears of a gas line break forced the evacuation of a Tarrytown school Tuesday.

Officials say a contractor using a backhoe at the Tappan Hill School on Ichabod Lane broke a gas line around 11 a.m.

Officials ordered the school evacuated as the fire department and utility company responded. The firefighters arrived within three minutes, and investigators found that the gas line was actually inactive and posed no danger.

But Dave Goldstein, Tarrytown's fire chief, says that it's appropriate to take extra precautions when an issue involves children.

The BOCES school educates special needs children. School officials say nearly 50 students were taken to EF International Language Center in Tarrytown while utility crews investigated the gas lines. The kids were released for the day about an hour later.

No injuries were reported, and officials say classes will resume Wednesday.
