Families across New York will soon be able to file for a refundable tax credit to help lift the burden of financial costs associated with the emotional loss of a stillborn child.
According to The Star Legacy Foundation, an organization dedicated to reducing pregnancy loss, one in 160 pregnancies in the U.S. ends in stillbirth.
To commemorate Infant Loss Awareness Month, state Sen. Shelley Mayer and Assemblyman David Buchwald announced new legislation on Tuesday to provide a $2,000 refundable tax credit to affected parents. The credit is supposed to help ease the financial burden associated with a stillbirth.
Lawmakers plan on introducing the bill in the next legislative session.
