Newburgh Enlarged City School District officials held a regular meeting on Tuesday where they provided an update on the 2024-2025 proposed budget.
As part of the update, officials addressed budget adjustments that included the potential for layoffs.
At the bottom of this district document, page 19 shows in the footnote that they are considering the reduction of about 102 positions which are mostly through retirement and vacancies. The footnote also mentions that 78 positions were funded by American Rescue Funds in fiscal year 2024.
Jerry Lamar, a former board member, had concerns about these potential cuts saying, "They made it seem as though 'Oh don't worry about this, these are retirements.' But my question is, if they're retirements, that's fine, but they should be replaced so those children aren't missing out on services."
Meanwhile, Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell, the superintendent, said, "Our layoffs will be minimal at most. I believe we are at approximately 12 at across all of our bargaining units."
According to the district's website, an adoption of the proposed budget is expected no later than April 19.
