The return of Memorial Field in Mount Vernon may not be far away.
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas says the field is due to reopen this summer after being closed for a decade.
Work is already underway on the field to remove mounds of contaminated dirt, and to install grass and an eight-lane track.
Thomas says the DPW has handled the work, saving taxpayers about $500,000.
The field has been mired in controversy after millions were spent on it, but the field has largely been in ruins.
The field was once a go-to spot for local sporting events, graduations and more.
Thomas says the long-term plan to make the field a state-of-the-art facility could cost millions. He plans to rely on federal, state and local partners to receive those funds.
