Mt. Vernon group sues to suspend election results
Mount Vernon residents have filed a federal lawsuit to suspend the results of the Mount Vernon mayoral election just two days after Election Day.
The residents say the federal probes of Mount Vernon City Hall during the campaign amounted to a ?racially motivated conspiracy? against Mayor Ernie Davis, who lost the election to Democrat Clinton Young.
A lawyer for the group of residents, who are calling themselves Friends of Mayor Ernie Davis, says ?The actions of the governmental agencies were discriminatory?involving members of Mayor Davis? opposition.?
Davis himself, however, has not called for the results of the election to be thrown out.
The suit claims several federal agencies and the other candidates for mayor were part of a conspiracy to force Davis out of office and keep minorities away from the polls on Election Day.
The U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI, the U.S. Attorney?s Office, the New York Board of Elections, the Westchester Board of Elections, Republican candidate Janet Snyder and Mayor-elect Young are all named in the suit.
Friends of Mayor Ernie Davis has planned a rally and hopes to get 1,000 residents to sign a petition calling for the election results to be thrown out. The rally will be held at the Macedonia Center in Mount Vernon Tuesday.
Young, who says the suit is vindictive and defies logic, is calling on Davis to condemn it.
