Monitor calls for unity in E. Ramapo school district
The man hired to monitor the East Ramapo school district is calling for unity after a week of disharmony in Rockland County.
State appointed monitor Dennis Walcott spoke at Gracepoint Gospel Church Sunday calling for unity in the district.
"We pledge our support to the entire district, all the residents to work together on behalf of our students," said Walcott.
Due to recent troubles in the district, Walcott is recommending a permanent monitor to oversee decisions by the Orthodox Jewish-dominated school board.
The board has been accused of using money for private schools, where many of their children are students, at the expense of the public school.
Some Jewish leaders are calling the proposal anti-Semitic.
Aron Weider, a prominent figure in the Jewish community, recently quit as the leader of the Rockland County Legislature in order to fight the recommendation.
Walcott, however, says he remains focused on the children of East Ramapo.
In order for that proposal to go through, the state Legislature would have to pass a bill and then the governor would have to sign the bill.
