Geoff Bansen: Thanks for taking a few moments to chat today Darryl! Let’s start with your early life.

Darryl Green: I grew-up in Englewood, New Jersey. As a kid, my friends and I took long bike rides and played football, basketball, and baseball. As I got older, I became interested in playing the guitar. Never took any formal lessons, just learned from my friends, and played by ear. That was a very, very long time ago!

G: Now you weren’t someone that knew he was going to be on TV from day one…. You came into broadcasting a little bit later, correct?

D: I had a communications teacher in high school by the name of Mrs. Kramer. Mrs. Kramer was the one who first suggested that I investigate communications and broadcasting. Unfortunately, it was decades before I seriously considered it.

G: Tell us about your journey.

D: I worked late stage collections for the former National Community Bank. Seeing people lose their home is very depressing.  However, there were times that I was able to work with our clients to bring them current on their mortgage payments. I was also in the 50 Military Police Company, New Jersey Army National Guard. I was considering a career in law enforcement or making a career out of the military. I was a very different person then! Broadcasting re-surfaced due to a blind date. Long story short, I met the young lady’s father who insisted that we meet before I took his daughter anywhere. After talking for a few minutes, he asked if I had ever considered broadcasting as a career. It was at that moment that I realized that maybe others saw something in me that I did not see in myself. The following Monday, I enrolled in a broadcasting class at Bergen Community College. The instructor of the class opened the door to my first job working at Vision Cable Channel 10 News in Palisade Park, New Jersey, which later became Time Warner Cable Channel 10 News. It was great! I was working with and learning from the people that I watched five nights a week. I started by learning to operate the studio cameras, then the audio console. I also learned how to develop and present a weather forecast while taking classes in meteorology at Kean University two nights a week. These were days of very little sleep as I was also working full time at AT&T Wireless.

G: How long were you at Channel 10?

D: From 1992 to 1998. In 1998, I was offered the opportunity to join News 12 Networks as a member of the team that launched what became News 12 Traffic and Weather (now News 12+.) Through this, I was eventually also offered the opportunity to work as a fill-in Weather Anchor, and the rest is history.

G: What's your favorite part of the job?

D: Informing our audience of current and future weather conditions.

G: Alright, it’s time for the lightning round! What's Darryl Green’s perfect hyperlocal forecast?

D: Mid-70s, low humidity, mostly clear with a light breeze.

G: Favorite season?

D: Spring!

G: Most memorable weather event you’ve covered?

D: Hurricane Irene in 2011.

G: Most fascinating weather phenomenon?

D: Fog.

G: Would you ever go storm chasing?

D: Nope. While storms are fascinating, I'd make sure that I am in a safe indoor space. One of the reasons for getting into this business is to know when to get the hell out of the way!

G: Cake or pie?

D: Cake ...Lemon please!

G: Favorite holiday?

D: July 4...barbecue and fireworks.

G: Favorite “junk” food?          

D: Pizza.

G: Last song you downloaded/played on your phone?

D:  Grover Washington Jr. “Nice and Easy.”

G: Place you’d most want to travel?

D: Not crazy about traveling these days.

G: If you could be anything or anyone else for a day, what/who would it be?

D: A NASA astronaut with the mission of going into space and surveying the earth. What’s going on? What are we doing to Mother Earth?

G: Are you a sports fan? Do you have a favorite local team?

D: Not too interested in sports...I can take it or leave it!

G: Okay, well done! Let's move on. What do you like to do for fun?

D: I’m a homebody. As long as I have food, drinks, a computer, cable TV and music, I’m a happy guy.

G: What do you love most about our area?

D: 4 seasons!

G: What would you like to tell anyone who has watched you consistently over your career?

D: I’m just a guy that knows a little about weather and likes presenting it to the public. I hope that my forecast helps you to have a safer and pleasant day.
