Man fatally shot by police after alleged attack
Spring Valley police say an officer was forced to shoot and kill a Haitian immigrant who attacked him outside a bar early this morning. Spring Valley Police Chief Paul Modica says the incident took place shortly after 3:30 a.m. near El Buen Gusto Bar on East Furman Avenue. He says 48-year-old Herve Gilles was apparently drunk, violent and resisting arrest when he was shot in the head and torso by a fellow officer. Security staff at the bar say they called police several times because Gilles was throwing rocks after being thrown out. Police say the responding officer was hit with a stick and had bite marks on his body. He was taken to a nearby hospital and released. Members of the village's Haitian community say they want an outside investigation into the shooting.
