A boat caught fire at a marina in Babylon Tuesday, injuring at least one person.
The incident took place at 458 Fire Island Ave. next to Captree Fuel Bait and Tackle.
Flames tore through three boats. Michael Goodyear says he and a friend saw the smoke from a few blocks away and raced over to see what it was.
"As soon as we got there we saw there was three boats on fire, then a series of explosions and like loud thumps," said Goodyear.
Bill Deak, of Oakdale, says he saw surveillance video that captured the scene as it all went down. He says a man named Keith Newell was working on his boat at the time.
"He goes underneath, inside the engine department and all you see is flames," says Deak. "You see him come jumping out of the hatch of the cabin and within 20 seconds, the boat is completely engulfed in flames."
Fire officials say it's not clear how the blaze began, but they say one of the boat owners was on his vessel when the fire started. He suffered burns and was taken to Nassau University Medical Center. Officials say his injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Four departments responded to the scene around 2:15 p.m. Babylon Fire Chief Michael Golub says it took them just under an hour to get it under control.
"We don't have wind but it's hard because there's gas -- the tank -- and that's hard to put out. Fiberglas is also hard to put out," says Golub.
The fire did touch the back of a nearby building, but no one inside was hurt.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
