The last teen who escaped from a youth detention facility in Atlantic County was captured after two days on the run.
Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon Tyner says that 18-year-old Michael Huggins was arrested around 10:30 a.m. Thursday inside an Atlantic City apartment.
Huggins and three other teens allegedly overpowered a corrections officer at the Harborfields Youth Detention Facility in Egg Harbor City. The teens assaulted the officer, stole his car and fled on foot after crashing the vehicle, according to authorities.
Three of the escapees were found 36 miles away in Bridgeton more than nine hours later. But Huggins remained at large.
Tyner says that tips led law enforcement to the apartment in Atlantic City and Huggins surrendered without incident. Tyner says that Huggins was in possession of a gun at the time, but did not release how he got it.
Tyner says that he believes that the escape was planned in advance.
Huggins is now facing several charges, including escape, robbery, assault on a law enforcement officer and conspiracy. He was previously charged in the 2016 slaying of 21-year-old Davonte Lee, of Bridgeton, who was gunned down in a vehicle, which is why he was at the detention center.
Huggins is now being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, according to the prosecutor.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
