Two Mount Vernon sanitation workers were suspended Friday after being accused of illegally picking up construction garbage out of a white truck on Cortlandt Street.
The workers were reportedly caught on camera performing the unauthorized clean up.
City Councilman Andre Wallace says contractors have to pay for separate trash pickups. If they don't, the city gets fined, and taxpayers end up picking up the bill.
News 12 Westchester has learned that this isn't the first time one of the workers has been suspended for something like this. Balram Baldeo was suspended last summer after being caught picking up garbage form his and his son’s homes on unauthorized days.
The Department of Public Works Commissioner tells News 12 that he intends to fire both workers if he can get the union's support.
City officials say this kind of alleged corruption may not just be happening with sanitation workers, but with other employees at different city departments as well.
