The first drive-thru coronavirus testing site has opened on the East Coast at Glen Island Park, complete with a total of six lanes.
At the recommendation of a doctor, those with an appointment can drive up, get swabbed by medical professionals and be on their way back home without the risk of exposing many more health care professionals and the general public than if they were at a hospital. Results are said to take about a day or so to come back.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo debuted the site on Friday saying more testing will help slow and stop the spread of COVID-19 by isolating the positives and tracking who else may have been exposed. He is hoping 500 people a day can be tested at the facility.
The Governor also announced plans to open a second testing location on Long Island.
The federal government granted New York state more reign over testing on Friday, so 28 more labs are now authorized to run results.
Due to being the hotspot for New York's outbreak, New Rochelle residents have priority, as well as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
New Rochelle joins Seattle, Denver and the Bay Area with similar testing facilities.
Northwell Health tells News 12 this drive-thru testing facility is open 7 days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
