Officials say Yorktown’s garbage hauler is facing a $1,500 fine if it does not pick up garbage from households.

Yorktown Town Supervisor Tom Diana says they received nearly 50 complaints a day about how their contractor failed to follow through on the company’s promise to return the town’s garbage.

Diana says Yorktown’s former supervisor negotiated a contract with Competitive Carting to save money for residents. However, he says this is the town’s second major issue with the company.

After holding emergency meetings, threatening to fine the company and issuing a notice of default, Diana says the town is taking measures to ensure the disruptions never happen again.

“We conducted a review of their equipment and staffing, and we have been assured Competitive Carting is committed to adding and maintaining the resources necessary to meet their obligation to the residents of the town of Yorktown,” he said.

Yorktown officials remind residents to be patient and say that they should leave both trash and recycling out on the curb as the contractor catches up. Diana says residents should have their trash picked up by the end of the day.
