Book worms rejoice - today is National Read Across America Day!
It's a day to encourage kids to pick up a book and dive into a story.
It also falls on the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss.
Mayor Mike Spano and other city leaders joined School Superintendent Dr. Edwin Quezada for the celebration at the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Microsociety School Thursday.
Many brought their favorite books to read to the children. "I selected 'What Do You Do With A Problem' by Colby Amatta, to try to make a math connection with solving problems. I just think it really speaks to not thinking of problems as a negative thing, but an opportunity for learning," said Michael McDonald, executive director of mathematics for Yonkers schools.
"I got 'Too Much Noise' by Anne McGovern and the pictures are by Sims Tayback. I hope they find joy in it. I hope that they enjoy it and want to hear it again, and again, and again," says Sheila Greenwald, Yonkers Board of Education trustee.
School Principal Elda Perez-Mejia says the annual event introduces students to texts they would've never read. "They get to see by our guest reader selections and all the wonderful things that are available for them to read and enjoy. It doesn't matter what they're reading, as long as they're reading."
