Yonkers has taken over jobs in the city's school district, worrying employees who fear they may lose money.

Fifty-three union members, who all hold non-teaching positions at the Board of Education, are affected. The city took over their jobs to save the district money, but it means the 53 workers must leave the CSEA union and join SEIU, a new union at City Hall.

The workers were told their base salary will remain the same, but some say they could lose up to 20 percent of their paychecks because the new union has a different contract. The workers say they are currently figuring out exactly what benefits they will be able to carry over in the transition.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano defended the switch, saying it is necessary to protect jobs.
