Yonkers firefighters are warning residents about squatters after a homeless man was found unconscious inside an abandoned home following a fire.
Firefighters found a 60-year-old man inside the abandoned house at 37 Dunbar St. after a fire tore through. He remains hospitalized in a coma. Police say he may have been living in the home illegally and they had no idea he was inside until they checked the structure after the fire.
Neighbors say the house has been empty for two years. However, in the past few months, they have noticed someone gaining access to the house, possibly through the back.
Yonkers Assistant Fire Chief Robert Capurso says neighbors have to be on the lookout for any squatters in abandoned homes. Linda Hakim, the program director of the Sharing Community, says concerned neighbors can also contact the shelter so they can reach out and help.
