The city of Yonkers is distributing sandbags to help residents prepare for the hurricane season.
While Tropical Storm Fay left little damage in the Hudson Valley, officials are encouraging everyone to be prepared for similar storms through November.
People are also encouraged to avoid flooded areas and take all necessary precaution.
Maria Pollard, spokesperson for Orange and Rockland counties, says pets and children should be kept away from wires near puddles or fences.
"You never know where the electricity is traveling," Pollard says.
The distribution of sandbags started at 7 a.m. and will continue through 3 p.m. at the Organic Waste Yard.
