Yonkers Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza and Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano joined officials within Yonkers Public Schools on Tuesday to host a training seminar for the district's public safety officers.
The officers learned skills on how to deescalate situations, respond to active threats and more.
In light of last week's Minnesota school shooting where two children were killed and 20 were injured, the Yonkers Police Department says it will also be increasing its patrols and safety drills in the community.
Police officers will be asked to familiarize themselves with response routes and school building layouts and will also patrol school grounds and check-in at each public and private schools while on duty.
"We do basically like a fire drill this way our officers know where the school is, how to get there, and how to access the school," said Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza, with the Yonkers Police Department.
Classes resume districtwide on Wednesday.
