Yonkers police recruits on Wednesday practiced responding to an active school shooting.
The officers dispersed throughout the Palisades Preparatory School with training equipment such as a 9mm model gun, searching for a mock shooting suspect.
The training involved hours of shooting scenarios, preparing 14 recruits for a real-world situation. They were not allowed to carry real weapons like batons for safety reasons. The guns they carried used training rounds made of wax.
Since 2013, there have been at least 160 shootings at schools around the country.
