? Authorities that were called to investigate a suspicious taxi cab in Yonkers Thursday discovered written materials inside the vehicle that led to a large-scale investigation involving the FBI.
Police say the materials they found in the cab contained writings in English and another language, which investigators refused to identify.
?Obviously, it wasn't your everyday written material,? says Police Capt. Sal DiMaggio. ?It was something that aroused our concern to this level.?
The Westchester County Bomb Squad went to Shonnard Place after getting reports that a taxi cab, which may have been stolen, had explosives inside. The emergency crew used a bomb-diffusing robot to get a better look at the vehicle, which was parked near the 4th Precinct. The robot found no chemical or explosive materials.
People living on Shonnard Place between Palisade and Park avenues were advised to evacuate. All streets leading to the taxi?s location were blocked off for more than four hours. Gorton High School was placed on lockdown.
According to police, at around 8:30 a.m., the cab hit another car near the intersection of Glenwood and Warburton avenues.
"As the accident happened, the driver of the taxi opened the door and fled," says Police Commissioner Edmund Hartnett. "He's being sought right now."
