A Yonkers native was one of 11 ambassadors picked by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to highlight the diversity of the state's LGBTQ community during celebrations at and around the Stonewall Inn.
Angelique Piwinski says to be chosen by the governor to represent New York during World Pride 2019 was “the greatest honor.”
She submitted a three-minute video demonstrating why she would be a good representative for New York and Yonkers.
Piwinski says the Stonewall police raid 50 years ago left an impression on her, saying she watched it all unfold on her black and white TV.
“I remember thinking...that takes a lot of guts because you're basically saying that we had enough," she says.
The raid and the push back from the community sparked the LGBTQ movement that seeks acceptance and equality.
Piwinski will be among millions of people from around the world who are coming to New York this weekend for World Pride celebrations.
