Officials in Yonkers are banking on the approval of a bill about to be introduced in Albany to help fund much-needed repairs at the city's schools.
Mayor Mike Spano wants to spend millions to rebuild decaying school buildings in Yonkers. He is hoping that legislation by Assemblywoman Shelley Mayer will help.
Similar legislation has helped rebuild schools in upstate New York.
"It's a complicated system where you're developing a whole new methodology and you want to do it right and you want to be fair to the people of Yonkers and the taxpayers of New York state," says Assemblywoman Mayer.
If the bill is passed, more than $5 million in funds would be disbursed for improvements. City officials say they would then create a board that includes parents to oversee how the money is spent.
Assemblywoman Mayer says she would like to get the school bill passed before lawmakers end their session for the summer.
