The
City of Yonkers will be adding 90 electric vehicle charging stations, Mayor Mike Spano announced Tuesday.
To
date, 36 charging ports are up and running – including four at the Greystone
train station. A total of 54 more are in the works and will be strategically
placed across the city.
They are
aimed at residents who live in townhouses, condos and apartment buildings.
Yonkers
received funding from Con Edison, the Department of Environmental Conservation
and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to launch the
EV charging station expansion.
"Yonkers
now has the largest municipal fleet of EV charging stations outside of New York
City," said William Serratore, the director of the Yonkers Office of
Sustainability.
The
new charging stations can charge an EV in three to six hours, and
cost $10 to $15.
The
state is also working to add fast charging EV stations along major travel
corridors. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the infrastructure initiative in
December and set a goal to have 850,000 electric vehicles in the state by 2025.
A new
poll shows that four in 10 Americans are considering switching to an electric
vehicle. Currently, only 8% of U.S. adults say they or someone in their
household owns or leases an EV.
