A Yonkers construction company was chosen to help rebuild the World Trade Center, despite allegations of bribery and links to organized crime.
World Trade Center developer Larry Silverstein has chosen the Yonkers Contracting Company to create 85-foot foundations for Towers 3 and 4 at the World Trade Center site.
The $40 million project was awarded to the company despite a 2004 investigation by federal prosecutors that accused it of bribing corrupt trade union officials.
Investigators believed the firm paid $50,000 a year to Operating Engineers Local 15 to look the other way when the company hired non-union workers. Prosecutors also say Local 15 had long been tired to the Columbo crime family.
Yonkers Contracting has never been charged with any crime. The firm denies any connection to organized crime.
The company has done previous cleanup work at the World Trade Center site. The Silverstein organization says it is confident Yonkers Contracting will perform with the same level of professionalism as it has done in the past.
