A 23-month-old Yonkers boy who is battling leukemia is inspiring people all over the world.
Riley was born with Down syndrome, and was diagnosed with megakaryoblastic leukemia 17 months later, say both of his mothers, Tara and Amy. The leukemia forced the family to move into the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Valhalla.
During his six-month hospital stay, there were many times when the cancer drained Riley of all his strength, but he always managed to prevail. His upbeat attitude and smile have turned Riley into a celebrity in his own right.
Tara started the Smiley Riley Facebook page to keep her family and friends updated on Riley's status. The page grew enormously, attracting the support of strangers inspired by Riley's ability to keep smiling despite his circumstances.
Riley completed his last round of chemotherapy a few weeks ago and is in remission. His doctors and moms are now awaiting his blood cell count to rise before he can be released.
The boy's mothers also say that he could be home by the end of the week.
