A construction worker escaped serious harm when he jumped from a piece of heavy equipment at a Yonkers worksite Monday.A rock hammer, which is used to drill rocks, tipped over at Palisade and Roberts avenues. Workers were trying to clear land to build homes on a rocky hill. Police believe the ground shifted, causing the problem.
Witnesses say the operator was able to jump to safety as it tipped over. The vehicle's cab is now crushed. He refused medical treatment for his bruises and scratches and insisted on being taken home.
The crew called in a crane to right the rock hammer and bring it safely off the hill.
The accident comes days after a construction worker was killed by a piece of heavy equipment in Harriman State Park in Rockland County.
