Police are searching for a suspect who assaulted a woman in a White Plains public parking garage early Wednesday morning.
Authorities say the victim, a 23-year-old woman, was attacked at around 4 a.m. at the Chester Maple Parking Garage on Mamaroneck and Maple avenues. A police officer found the woman on the roof of the garage.
Police spent hours at the scene, gathering evidence and examining a staircase where the attack occurred, trying to find out who attacked the woman and why. There are several surveillance cameras in the garage that they hope will help with the investigation.
The victim, whose name has not been released, is recovering from her injuries at White Plains Hospital. Police say she was not seriously hurt in the attack and they do not believe she was sexually assaulted. According to authorities, the victim had recently moved to White Plains from Florida.
People who enjoy the nightlife on Mamaroneck Avenue say the area is busy even at night, and they are surprised such an attack could have happened. ?I park my car here all the time at night,? Rochelle Washington, a Scarsdale resident, says. ?I don?t see anything unsafe about it.? Washington parks her car in the lot every day for work, and isn?t afraid to come back and park at night.
One negative aspect about the area, according to Harvey Milman, is that drinking can get out of hand. ?There?s evidence that people have overdone things,? he says. Milman works in the area.
Officers are waiting to interview the victim at the hospital.
