A combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain turned Westchester roads into a frozen mess Tuesday.
DPW crews were out during the day preparing the roads for the dangerous conditions. Drivers had to navigate through treacherous conditions for the afternoon and evening commutes.
Crews in White Plains say they had to mix the salt with sand to make better traction on the roads in the extremely cold temperatures. The commissioner of public works says the crews will work overnight to try to make the roads manageable for the morning commute.
Meanwhile, rush-hour traffic moved slowly over the Tappan Zee Bridge after snow and virtual white-out conditions took over the span.
