White Plains police say a 49-year-old man was fatally shot just minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve.

They say Shawn Jefferson was shot on Kenisco Avenue and died in a local hospital around 12:30 a.m.

Some residents tell News 12 they thought they heard fireworks while others say they recognized the sound of gunshots and were scared to find out.

Anyone with information is asked to call White Plains police.
