More than 3 weeks ago, a privately owned parking garage in White Plains partially collapsed. Officials have now announced the closure of another garage owned by the city. News Tw's Lauren Del Valle spoke with residents who are looking for answers. The Lexington Grove West garage behind me is the 2nd garage to be closed this month alone in the city of White Plains due to unsafe conditions. The first was a privately owned garage at 50 Hale Avenue, which partially collapsed, initially trapping around 15 cars. For a garage to collapse like Hale Avenue is a big problem because if people, if people were in there and a collapse, they would have been dead. According to city officials, White Plains. yearly engineering assessments of the city-owned garages. During the Lexington Grove West inspection, officials say independent engineers noted issues rendering the garage unsafe. Officials did not specify what the inspection found, but in walking around the perimeter, visible cracks peeling walls and debris were seen in and around the property. White Plains residents say it's unacceptable. I think someone woke up and said, Hey, we should, we should. Investigate or inspect the garages. I think that it took the collapse for that to happen. I would probably park on the street rather than park in a parking garage for sure, knowing that, you know, who knows if it's going to crash down on you or not. Officials say the Lexington Grove East Garage has been deemed safe by engineers and remains open. However, for the Lexington Grove West Garage, the garage will be closed until further notice in White Plains, Westchester County, Lauren Delval, News 12.

It's been 2 weeks since a White Plains parking garage partially collapsed on Hale Avenue, and new details are emerging about the garage's history. News Tw's Lauren Del Valle looked over some of the documents and has this report. On October 15th, a part of the fifth floor of the parking garage collapsed onto the 4th floor. Following a request made under the Freedom of Information law. News 12 was able to retrieve a box load of documents from the city's buildings department. It details correspondence between the city's building department and the garage's owner, among other parties. The contents include various construction plans and permits for. The garage and the building connected to it. Westchester one. This package shows multiple pages of structural restoration plans, including documents approved by the building department in 2024 and 2025. City officials confirmed the documents were approved without them receiving any state mandated assessment reports since 2018. The work included steel beam and concrete removal. And replacements amongst other work. Garages themselves are uh are more susceptible than other buildings to deterioration and and damages as a result of that deterioration, just because of the way that they're used. However, Wilde says this is still uncommon. It's very, very rare, uh, especially when you don't have, uh, a traumatic event like an earthquake or a hurricane or something like that, um. For buildings to have any any portion of them collapse, even if it's partial. Almost two weeks later and some cars are still trapped within the collapse zone. All three of the exits are closed off, begging the question of what the next steps will look like and how this happened. The cause and origin of the failure is still under investigation in White Plains, Westchester County, Lauren Del Val, News 12.

We've got new information today about the safety of more than 40 garages in White Plains that you might park in. This is just one week after that parking garage partially collapsed in the city. News 12's Lisa LaRocca has the very latest for us. 40 privately owned parking garages here in White Plains are in violation of state and city laws, but still, city officials say the structures are safe. The partial collapse of the 5th floor at the parking garage on Hale Avenue last Wednesday morning prompted White Plains city officials to conduct a review of records for privately owned parking structures in the city, and what they found is concerning. Reports from approximately 40 garages had not been filed with the city's building department in 2018, a state law was created requiring all privately owned parking structures be inspected every 3 years by a qualified engineer, and the owners must then file the report with their local municipalities. White Plains city officials say they even sent out three separate notices to all owners alerting. To the requirements as a result of the missing reports, staff from the building department began conducting walkthroughs of all 40 garages last week, and they tell News 12 no safety issues that would require a closure were found. However, tickets are being sent to all the owners for failure to submit inspection reports. City officials say the owner of the Hale Avenue garage, listed as 44 South Broadway owner. has already been ticketed for an unsafe structure. Building department officials also say the day of the collapse, the owner showed them a copy of an assessment report dated November of last year, but no word yet on what is in the report. Now the cause of the collapse here is still under investigation, and they are still working to get all the cars out. We're in White Plains, Westchester County, Lisa LaRocca, News 12.

This afternoon crews are still on site at that partial collapse of a parking garage in White Plains. This is a story you heard first here on News 12 today. They are trying to shore up this structure here. Let's get right to News 12's Lisa LaRocca, who is on the scene with the very latest information. Lisa. Yes, you may not see a lot of action going on behind me here on Hale Avenue in White Plains, but police and fire officials who are on the scene throughout the morning tell me that engineers were in the structure overnight trying to get everything all shored up, stabilized so they can start getting some of those cars that are inside to get them out. Now I'm being told there are about 600 cars in there right now, but Removal is going to take a while, of course. This is all due to the collapse that occurred about 9 yesterday morning. A portion of the 5th floor suddenly caved onto the 4th floor. There are about 15 cars in what's called the collapse zone. Thankfully, amazingly, no one was injured. Getting the cars out though is going to take a while because each time they move, move a few, they'll have to stop and check the stability of this huge 14 story structure. As weight gets removed from from floors, um, they have to reassess, um, as, as they go. So it, it certainly will not be a OK, all the cars can go, it is going to be controlled process. Yeah, and listen, the chief says he understands that it's very inconvenient for people to not have their cars, but they have to do this safely and properly. The hope is they'll be able to start moving a few this afternoon, uh, but they also have to get the keys from people as well. So again, this is going to take quite a while. We're in White Plains, Lisa, let's go back to you. All right, Lisa, do we know yet exactly what caused the partial collapse? What are you hearing about that? Yeah, you know, I asked about that, and they said, you know, they don't know at this point. There will certainly be an investigation into that. They'll be looking into any code violations. I mean, we heard from people yesterday who said they weren't surprised that this happened, but they said right now they are just putting all their focus on getting this thing stabilized and getting the cars back to people. It's 600 people. It's an awful lot of folks who don't have their cars right now.
