Police are searching for a driver who struck a man in a hit-and-run accident Thursday night in White Plains.
Investigators say 39-year-old Benigno Yalle was mowed down shortly before 10 p.m. in a crosswalk on Maple Avenue at South Lexington Street.
The victim, who sustained massive head injuries, was immediately rushed to Westchester Medical Center, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
Officials say a traffic camera may have captured the license plate of the vehicle described by one witness as a small white or silver SUV, but police are hoping they could get more information about the vehicle from a passerby or a tenant of a nearby apartment building who might have seen the accident.
As to the driver of the vehicle that hit Yalle, White Plains Police Commissioner Robert Wolf says the best thing he or she can do now is come forward.
?If it was an accident, it?s an accident,? he says. ?They left the scene, but let's not make this worse than it is.?
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run in White Plains is asked to call White Plains police at 914-422-6111. All calls will be kept confidential.
