Thousands of people are expected to crowd into downtown White Plains on New Year's Eve to ring in 2007. Thursday, workers tested the city?s famous ball drop to make sure everything runs smoothly on the big night. The White Plains Department of Public Works put up a huge, brand-new 2007 sign that will light up with thousands of miniature lights when the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. The city?s version of Times Square north is a welcome addition to New Year's Eve, according to many who don?t want to trek into Manhattan.
White Plains Mayor Joseph Delfino says the city tries to come up with a new innovation for the New Year's celebration each year. Delfino admits there is a little competition between the New York City celebration and the one in White Plains. He boasts that the city?s ball has 10,000 lights, making it bigger than the one in Times Square.
