Improving school safety is a growing concern across the country after the deadly shooting in Florida, and one suggestion coming from the White House is to arm teachers.

The idea of arming teachers on a voluntary basis has caused quite a bit of debate all across the country and throughout the Hudson Valley.

This week President Donald Trump held a listening session as he met with students and parents affected by school shootings, and some who attended made the suggestion.

President Trump says gun-free zones leaves schools vulnerable to attack and having someone in the school who is armed could help stop a shooter.

He says teachers and administrators who volunteer would get military or special training to then have concealed guns as a layer of protection in schools.

President Trump has also expressed support for regulating bump-fire stocks, which make it easier to fire rounds more quickly, and strengthening background checks for gun purchases.
