A new analysis estimates New Jersey shoppers could see grocery-cost differences of more than 50%, depending on which major supermarket chain they choose.

The analysis from Freedom Debt Relief identified Lidl as the least expensive major grocery chain available in New Jersey and Whole Foods as the most expensive among the retailers studied.

Lidl’s price index was 8.5% below Walmart’s benchmark, while Whole Foods was 39.7% above it. That translates to an estimated 52.7% difference between the two chains.

The findings are modeled state-level comparisons, not a survey of individual New Jersey stores. Freedom Debt Relief used national chain pricing from a Consumer Reports comparison conducted with Strategic Resource Group, then determined which of the measured chains currently operate in each state. Prices can vary by store and location.

Using Walmart’s $100 benchmark, the indexes translate to about $91.50 at Lidl and $139.70 at Whole Foods, a difference of $48.20.

The underlying grocery comparison used prices collected in late summer 2025 for baskets of commonly purchased packaged goods, produce and meat. Researchers compared as many as 56 identical items, though smaller baskets were used for some specialty grocers with fewer directly comparable products.

Shelf sale prices and discounts available through free loyalty programs were included, while manufacturer coupons and app-only discounts were excluded. Warehouse clubs, including Costco and BJ’s, were also excluded because of membership requirements and differences in package sizes.
