October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

News 12's Angelica Toruno spoke with medical experts to get the breakdown on when women should start getting checked and how important it is to follow through.

The recommendation from Dr. Mehra Golshan, deputy chief medical officer at Yale Cancer Center, is to start getting mammograms at 40, and to do it yearly.

Early detection can help get a better outcome, experts say.

News 12 and Spectrum News NY1 are collaborating on a program to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month airing on Oct. 30 at 9 p.m. The 30-minute special will highlight cutting-edge research taking place in the tri-state area as well as underscore the importance of breast cancer prevention and detection.
