U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) visited New York Friday to talk about immigration reform. Senator McCain wants to get new laws on the books to help undocumented workers. The McCain-Kennedy bill, as it is known, would enable undocumented workers to register with the Department of Homeland Security and pay a $2,000 fine. They may also become eligible for a work permit. The Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR) organized the town hall style meeting for the senator. Members say they are in full support of the legislation McCain has sponsored along with U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA). The House version of the immigration bill would make it a felony for anyone to be in the United States illegally.
