Hundreds packed Rye Beach as Memorial Day weekend unofficially kicked off the summer season.
"It's not cold," said Carol Medina, of White Plains. "It's not snowing. It's beautiful out."
While many spent the day bathing in the sun, others note it is a day to remember those who have died in combat.
Flags at half-staff served as reminders of fallen soldiers who throughout the country's history fought overseas and here at home.
"It gives you time to reflect," Medina said.
