A mobile food pantry is doing its part this Hunger Action Awareness Month by recovering unwanted groceries and giving them to those that need it most.
Feeding Westchester provides mobile food pantries across the county every week, offering things like fresh fruits, bread and meat. And its entire spread comes from local grocery stores.
The pantry offers high quality products that mimic a farmers market. The products are close to their 'use by' date, or are blemished, but are still perfectly good to eat. The organization currently works with about 60% to 70% of grocery stores in the county to rescue food, diverting quite a bit of it from landfills.
Tuesday's mobile food pantry was giving away about 5,800 pounds of food.
Those who want to use the mobile pantry do not need to qualify to use it -- anyone can show up, no questions asked.
