A Westchester IT director is preparing to travel to India to give life-changing gifts to some of the poorest people in southern India.
Johnson Samuel has made it is his life mission to help people from his hometown in India literally get back on their feet. Over the past three years, he's donated life-changing high-end prosthetic legs to 81 people.
"Not having a leg is equal to not living," says Samuel.
He explained that the limbs are expensive - $1,500 for a below the knee prosthetic and nearly $2,200 for above the knee.
That money is mostly coming from his own pocket.
"The world can be better if we think about supporting other people every single day,” says Samuel.
Since more people heard his story, Samuel has received hundreds of letters from families in desperate need of prosthetic legs.
Next month, Samuel is traveling back to India for a fourth time to pay for and deliver prosthetics to 33 more people. He's invested $20,000 of his own money, but still needs $30,000 more.
He's hoping donations through a GoFundMe page will be enough.
"It's an amazing thing when you think about the impact you make on someone else's life,” says Samuel. “It’s a lot more than any other gift you can get."
