Thousands of NYPD officers and law enforcement personnel from around the region gathered in Queens Friday afternoon to attend wake services for slain NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos.
Ramos and his partner Officer Wenjian Liu were killed during an ambush shooting in Brooklyn last weekend. The gunman, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, fatally shot himself after the attack in a nearby subway station.
The wake included a large security presence outside Christ Tabernacle Church in Glendale. The double homicide came during heightened tensions between the public and police.
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Cardinal Timothy Dolan were in attendance during the service. Members of Westchester and Hudson Valley police departments were there as well.
A funeral for Officer Ramos is being held Saturday, and Vice President Joe Biden is among the hundreds expected to be in attendance. Funeral plans for Officer Liu are still being finalized.
