Westchester County honored members of law enforcement Thursday with special awards for exceptional service on the job.

The Pipes and Drums of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester led the county's 2018 Law Enforcement Awards ceremony at the County Center in White Plains.

Sgt. Lavalle Larrier, of the White Plains Police Department and two other officers were recognized for their quick actions back in March that prevented a suicidal man from jumping off a bridge over the Bronx River Parkway.

A team of officers from Yonkers was also honored with a first-place citation. The group was awarded for their exceptional act of bravery after coming under fire last September on a residential street in the city. Officer Kayla Maher was shot, and her colleagues risked their lives to save her.

“It's important that we recognize them for their efforts and thank them for the work that they do to keep our communities safe,” said Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardiner

A group of officers from the Mount Pleasant Police Department was recognized for their successful investigation and arrest of a suspect who attempted to break into two homes last November.

The awards ceremony also recognized members of law enforcement who lost their lives in the line of duty.
