Leaders of the Westchester County Police PBA gathered Friday to address what they call, "a growing public safety concern."

They say it stems from prolonged vacancies of critical supervisory positions.

"No police department should be expected to protect a growing county with fewer experienced leaders," says Wilberto Saez, who is the president of the Westchester County Police PBA.

PBA members say those vacancies are for roles like for sergeants.

"Supervisor spots need to be filled in case a mass incident occurs, you need the supervisors there because now the men and women are spread around and they need supervision," Saez tells News 12.

Saez says this also impacts resources for things like school safety, airport security and major public events.

"We're asking county leadership to act. Fill the vacant supervisory positions, continue investing in recruiting, retaining and developing the next generation of police officers," says Saez.

News 12 reached out to the county about these concerns. It sent the following statement:

"Westchester County is safer today than it has been in nearly a decade. That is not opinion - it is a fact backed by crime data. At this stage of contract negotiations, the PBA has initiated the arbitration process, and we remain committed to resolving these issues through that established process. DPS continues to operate effectively. All units within the Department have supervision and are overseen by a Captain. We are moving forward with the appointment of a Deputy Commissioner. Once that position is filled, we will await the results of the June sergeant's examination before beginning the next round of promotions. There are presently 43 Sergeants in the Department, when the 5 vacancies are filled there would be 48. Westchester County remains one of the safest counties in New York State because of the professionalism and dedication of the men and women who serve in law enforcement. We are grateful for their service and their commitment to protecting our residents. We remain ready to negotiate in good faith. "
