President Joe Biden signed a new gun violence reform
legislation on Saturday. Part of the legislation requires anyone 18 to
21-year-old to undergo enhanced background checks.
The bill also creates federal crimes for gun
traffickers and anyone who purchases guns for someone who would not pass a
background check. The penalty is up to 25 years in prison.
It also clarifies who needs to register as a
federally licensed gun dealer.
Last week the Supreme Court struck down a New
York gun law ruling Americans have the right to carry guns in public for
self-defense.
Westchester County executive George Latimer
says there needs to be clear guidance from the state government.
“I’ll look to the state because you want a
statewide response, not a county response,” says Latimer.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says her office will review
the decision. For now, nothing has changed.
The court’s decision does not automatically
give current residential permit owners the ability to carry guns outside their
home.
