The Westchester Democratic Committee decided to endorse current District Attorney Anthony Scarpino for the 2020 election in a close vote Wednesday night.
The convention took place at the County Center in White Plains, where the committee chose Scarpino over Mimi Rocah, 51.5% to 48.5%. The decision went late into the night, with the decision being handed down after 10 p.m.
Scarpino, a Bedford resident, relied on his record from his first four years, including refusing to prosecute small amounts of marijuana possession, advocating for common sense gun safety and prosecuting more hate crimes.
His challenger, Rocah, is a former assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York. The Scarsdale resident is now best known as a legal analyst for MSNBC. Her platform includes more transparency in criminal justice and prosecuting more human trafficking cases.
Leading up to this week's vote, each candidate received an endorsement from a state lawmaker. State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi, who represents parts of southern Westchester and the Bronx is backing Rocah. Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, of Scarsdale, is behind Scarpino.
